- This is Edinburgh Software Product's public domain implementation
- of TeX; it may be freely copied and redistributed. There are no
- restrictions on use by commercial sites. The only restrictions are
- those imposed by the author, Don Knuth of Stanford University.
-
- One of those restrictions are that copies of TeX cannot officially
- be called simply 'TeX' until they have passed the TeX validation
- suite called trip. Since this implementation has not been tested
- under that suite, it should not be called TeX. Therefore, whenever
- writing about this software in any public forum please take care to
- call it 'ArMaTuReS'; if you wish to distinguish between the two different
- versions for 1Mb machines and >= 2Mb machines, you may call them
- 'TeX310' and 'TeX440' resoectively.
-
- This suite comes configured for use on machines with more than 1Mb
- of ram. In order to use it on a 1mb A310, you must edit the file
- !TeX.!boot, and change the line:
-
- *Set tex$which 440
-
- to
-
- *Set tex$which 310
-
- (You have to double-click on the !TeX directory WHILE HOLDING DOWN
- THE SHIFT KEY in order to get at the !Boot file)
-
- (A310 users will almost certainly need to change their *status values
- to make more ram available. Appended after this file are the values
- shown by the commands *STATUS and *MODULES on a machine which has
- successfully run tex)
-
- To actually use this system you should do as follows:
-
- Preload whichever utilities you wish to use by double-clicking on
- them; this will place an icon on the bar at the bottom of the screen.
- (Experienced users might prefer to create a file !DeskBoot so that this
- happens automatically at startup)
-
-
- If you want to work on 'mydoc', first create a DIRECTORY (sometimes
- called a 'folder') called 'MyDoc'. Then create the text file with
- the TeX or Latex source, and save it as 'Mydoc.tex'.
-
- To run this through tex, pick up the DIRECTORY and drop it on the TeX
- icon (on the icon bar at the bottom of the screen). This will start it
- being processed by TeX.
-
- When it has been run successfully, pick up the directory again and
- drop it on the previewer icon. (At the time of writing, Edinburgh
- Software Products have not finished their previewer; it is targetted for
- 31st July. Meanwhile, an perfectly good previewer can be bought from Tools
- GmbH in Germany. If you have bought this product, we can supply details
- of how to use it with our version of TeX. We will only do so, however,
- when shown proof of purchase of the Tools system, including serial numbers)
-
- If you are happy with the document, you can go on to print it; if not,
- edit the document and repeat the preceding steps.
-
- At the moment only postscript printers are supported. If you have one,
- drop mydoc on the dvialw icon; this will convert TeX's output file (the
- 'dvi' file) into postscript. You can print this postscript file by
- dragging it onto the !PrinterPS icon. Unfortunately you have to
- actually double-click on the MyDoc directory to get at this file (it
- will be called 'mydoc.dvi-alw' - the alw stands for 'Apple LaserWriter).
- Later releases may allow you to drag the directory instead.
-
-
- That is roughly all there is to the system. We also supply bibtex which
- and latex which are used in a similar manner (dropping the directory onto
- their icons). Depending on how much room there was spare on the disks
- you sent, you may also find some sample test files in a directory called
- 'demo'.
-
- I hope you find this system useful. I'm happy to enter into correspondence,
- preferably by electronic mail. My email address is gtoal@uk.ac.ed - if this
- form isn't meaningful to you, ask a local networking guru to mangle it into
- what your mailer expects. I normally answer email promptly.
-
- I can also be reached by paper mail at the address below, but I'm ashamed
- to admit that paper mail usually takes a lot longer to be answered.
-
- Graham Toal,
- 76 Clare Court,
- Judd Street,
- London WC1H 9QW.
-
- I'll also take telephone calls during the following hours if I'm available:
- Weekdays: 9pm to midnight
- Weekends: 3pm to midnight
-
- I also have an answering machine, but please do not call (even to leave
- a message on the machine) before 11am. I work late and get very grumpy
- if I'm woken up early by the phone ringing!
-
- Future plans for this system include:
-
- An integrated RISC OS previewer (mostly done; included here)
- Metafont (Actually, it's included but you'll have to work out
- how to use it yourself; I haven't written a wimp interface yet)
- Multi-tasking for TeX and the DVI drivers. (done but VERY slow)
- TeX 3 (hmmm.... wait till it settles down...)
- Inclusion of RISC OS graphics in documents.
-
- However, most of this work is done by me in my spare time, so these are
- all in the far future.
-
- Best regards,
-
- Graham Toal.
